Do you struggle to take action when you know you should?
Do you find yourself procrastinating when you know you shouldn’t?
Does your life feel stuck because of your inability to get yourself to do the things you know you should be doing?
Often the problem comes from our inability to properly associate a high value outcome with the tasks required to achieve said outcome.
Let’s look at the problem first…..
We know that working on our side project so we can dump our soul depleting 9 to 5 requires putting in hours after work and on weekends. Unfortunately, few men can get themselves to actually do it.
We know that working out every day will lead to being in better shape and living a happier and healthier life but many of us can’t get ourselves to do it.
We know that writing that book we always wanted to write will lead to achieving a long-term dream but few of us can get ourselves to even start.
These are a just a few examples but there are many more outcomes that we fail to pursue because we either lack the ability to start or the ability to continue once we have started.
Now, let’s start talking about the solution……
As I mentioned, failure to properly associate tasks to their high-value outcome prevents us from taking action.
When we lose the connection between work and reward we lose motivation.
We are typically able to associate task to high value outcome regarding the work we do every day to earn our weekly paycheck because the association between our work and our weekly paycheck is strong. We work and a few days later a paycheck shows up.
That strong association doesn’t exist when it comes to most other things in life. (side hustle, working out, writing)
There may not be a high-value outcome like income from the work we put in to build our side hustle for a year or more. The strength of the association between our hard work and that future outcome is fragile.
When we build a powerful association between a task and a high-value outcome we create a never ending source of motivation and the energy we need to take action every day.
Building and maintaining that powerful association requires a constant dose of visualization that bonds the task to the outcome.
Keywords here are “constant dose”.
To do this we have to formulate ways to not only visualize ourselves enjoying the outcome of our work but we must also feel the deep emotional impact of reaching the goal. We must visit the future outcome often, preferably multiple times per day, in order to trigger the massive action required to produce massive results.
I call this Total Immersion Future Thinking (TIFT).
Don’t bother Googling TIFT because I made it up to describe the method used to fuse tasks to high value outcomes.
