What To Do The Moment You Realize You Are Going To Fail At Achieving a Goal

The moment you realize a goal is unattainable you should first own it and then start  documenting every detail you can about what was supposed to happen and what didn’t happen with brutal self-honesty.

DO NOT PONDER AND RUMINATE!

DO NOT POINT FINGERS!

Pondering and ruminating leads to creative excuses which will lead to further problems so avoid “thinking it over.” You want to learn exactly what happened not how you can justify the setback.

Whatever actually caused the failure, you will grow most as a man if you take full ownership of the setback. If it was your goal then it was your responsibility. Regardless of the fact that others might have contributed to the demise of said goal the fact remains that the buck stops with the person that set the goal.

If you struggle with this concept you might want to regroup for a minute and read Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink. Jocko will straighten out your thinking on the topic.

Next, write out two list….one of the things that went right and another of the things that went wrong.

No paragraphs, no deep retrospect….JUST FACTS!

There are two benefits to these lists. First, they will serve to get you to be precise with your thinking so you can drill down to facts fast. Second they will serve as a guide for when you get back in the game and take another swing at it.

You are going to take another swing at it…..right?

That’s what we men do.

We go at it again more experienced and battle proven….bruises and all.

Leave the quitting to the uninspired, that’s not you!

Finally…..

STUDY BOTH LISTS UNTIL YOUR EYES BLEED!

Extract the lessons and dump the emotions…..it’s time to get back to work and make it right fast.

Onward!
